As we study Colombia, we are learning that this country is one of only 17 in the world that is classified as "megadiverse." Did you know that Colombia has more species of birds than all of North America and Europe combined? Colombia has a wide range of climates from deserts to mountains to rain forest to savanna to tropical beach and ocean. For this reason, it has a wide range of animals.
We are learning the names of animals in Spanish and discovering that some names are cognates like "tigre" or "elefante" and same names are very different in Spanish like "vaca" (cow) or "conejo" (rabbit). We are learning that animals that are not regularly seen in Spanish speaking countries have names that are cognates (like elefante and tigre) while animals that are native to Spanish speaking countries have names that sound different in English and Spanish.
There are lots of games to play to practice the names of animals. On this website, go to the "Games" tab and scroll down to "Febrero." You'll find matching games, a battleship game, a guessing game, and lots of other fun animal games. We'll be on break next week, so this is a great time to practice!
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
